Ravensthorpe Airport, Western Australia

Ravensthorpe Airport is located about 15 nautical miles, or 28 kilometres, to the south of Ravensthorpe and is owned and operated by the Shire of Ravensthorpe. Skywest Airlines provides regularly scheduled service to Esperance and Perth, as well as closed-charter fly-in fly-out service for employees of the nearby mines.

The town of Ravensthorpe was first settled by white pastoralists in 1868. The land was inhabited by Wudjari Aborigines. When gold was discovered in 1898, the town was established and gazetted in 1900. The port of Hopetoun allowing shipping access and, in 1909, a railway was built. The town has a hospital, general store, primary and high schools, a church, restaurants, and motels. Fishing in the area draws many tourists, whose accommodations are met in Ravensthorpe. Many arrive at the Ravensthorpe Airport.

Mining in the area is handled by three companies, producing lithium, nickel, and gold. There are several national parks within the Shire.

Fitzgerald River

This national park covers nearly 329,000 ha, and is one of the largest in the country. The park abounds with flora species, including some that are found only in Fitzgerald River National Park. Bushwalking, camping, fishing, and swimming are some popular pastimes in the park. The river leads to wonderful venues for surfing on the coastal waters. When you visit or camp within the park boundaries, be sure to take at least four litres of water per person. Fresh water is nonexistent.

Dance Cottage

Housed within an early 20th century miner’s cottage, the Dance Cottage Museum offers a remarkable look at local history, as far back as the late 1800s. Farming implements, mining tools, and household artefacts are found throughout the cottage. A 1907 Buffalo Pitts steam traction engine, a brake van from Hopetoun and a railway passenger coach are found outside the museum. Every member of the family will learn something new.
