Redcliffe, Western Australia

Redcliffe, Western Australia is located in the City of Belmont, its LGA (local government area), and is considered a suburb of Perth. The population of the suburb was about 4,300 residents at the 2006 census. Its naming is a subject of debate. Some say that it was named by the first settlers for the Swan River’s steep red clay banks. Others contend that it was an early settler’s ancestral home’s name. At the very beginning of the suburb, there was only one property, Nulsen Haven. The home still stands today.

Redcliffe lies 18 minutes from the central business district of Perth, along the Swan River. After World War II, immigrants and refugees were called “New Australians,” and they were in need of housing. Some resided in tents while waiting for their homes to be finished in the Redcliffe and Belmont suburbs. When state government took over land to be used for the airport, Redcliffe was virtually shut off from the rest of the surrounding community. Mr. Coffee, a local man who had lived in Redcliffe his entire life, joined the Belmont council. He was largely responsible for the building of First Street bridge, including its pedestrian access.
