Revesby, New South Wales is in the LGA of the City of Bankstown. It is considered a suburb of Sydney, lying 22 km from the CBD, on the southwest side. It was named to honor Sir Joseph Banks in 1913. Banks was a botanist who arrived in Australia on the Endeavour, in 1770, along with Captain James Cook. Banks was the Squire of Revesby, as he inherited his father’s estate, Revesby Abbey, in Lincolnshire, England. The Turvey Street High School is also named for Banks. In 1804, George Johnston received a land grant. He was an officer in the marines who sailed to Australia on the First Fleet. His wife, Esther Julian, was granted 570 acres in 1813. She arrived on the same ship as Johnston, but as a convict. Samuel John Hales built the first mansion in the area in 1896. “The Pah,” on Tompson Road remains today, although it has been subdivided.
