Smithfield

Smithfield, New South Wales is a suburb of Sydney, lying about 30 km to the west. It is in the LGA of City of Fairfield and City of Holroyd. The population of Smithfield, at the 2006 census, was about 11,000 people. The suburb is about equally balanced between residential, industrial, and commercial sections. The original inhabitants were the Cabrogal, a sub-tribe of the Gandangara. They lived in the area for over 30,000 years. When Europeans arrived in the early 1800s, they called the area Chilsholm’s Bush. During this same time, homeless children were a problem. Convicts would turn their children out onto the streets. The Governor, Philip Gidley King, reserved 12,300 for a male orphan school. Not all of the land was utilized, and over the next few decades, it was bought up early cattle entrepreneurs. After a few years of failure, the enterprises were abandoned. Smithfield, however, did become a commercial centre, as it remains today. Around 1867, the settlement was still semi-rural, with wood timber cutters, orchards, tanneries, vine growers, and gardeners. Today, The Horsely Drive is the centre of commercial business, including a supermarket, restaurants, a pub, and specialty shops. Factories and warehouses take up a large section of town.

Smithfield Goes to Sydney

Most Smithfield residents drive the short distance into Sydney proper for attractions and entertainment. An interesting diversion is to view the Sydney sights by air. Sydney Seaplanes can accommodate you, and fly you on a sightseeing tour over the beaches, along the harbour and its many bridges, or over the Hawkesbury River. Choose a classier Beaver aircraft and a Cessna state-of-the-art Caravan. Many options are available to the discerning visitors. Take advantage of this unusual tour.

Walk the Harbour

The Sydney Harbour Circle Walk will take you five hours and will prove to be worth every minute. The path focuses on the harbour, with its bridges, islands, city skyline, and urban bushland. You won’t want to miss any of it, but, if you take all the optional loops, the walk will take nearly 10 hours, and you won’t have time to look around. Take it a small section at a time.
