South Grafton

Located in the Clarence River Valley, South Grafton, New South Wales is the hub of commerce for the valley. At the 2006 census, there were just over 17,500 people residing in the town. In the history of the indigenous aboriginal people, the Clarence River was a boundary between the Gumbainggir and Bundjalung nations. There are descendents of both tribes in the area today. The first settlers in the area, in about 1831, were cedar getters. Richard Craig, an escaped convict, was granted a pardon and one hundred pounds to bring cedar getters to the area to work. They traveled to the Clarence River aboard the cutter “Prince George.” The “Susan” arrived in 1838, with more settlers and cedar getters on board. Their first settlement was called “The Settlement”; however, it was changed in 1851 when Governor FitzRoy named the town for the Duke of Grafton, his grandfather. In 1885, South Grafton received city status. Today, the industries in town include fishing, sugar, logging, manufacturing, and beef cattle. Tourism is starting to make an important impact on the economy. The city is known as Jacaranda City, for the many trees.
