Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport, New South Wales is known officially as the Kingsford-Smith Airport. It is located in the Mascot and Arncliffe suburbs of the capital city. The airport is owned and operated by Sydney Airport Corporation, Ltd. In 1921, the federal government purchased land for a public airport, in Mascot. The land was previously owned by Nigel Love, a World War I pilot, who was planning to bring aircraft manufacturing to Australia. Love needed factory and aerodrome land, and soon found what was then a bullock paddock and abattoir. It was nearly custom-made for his purposes, as the land had been grazed evenly by cattle and sheep, and the surface was flat. The first flight was in November of 1919, and the official opening of the airport was in January of 1920, both flights being flown by Nigel Love. In 1933, Cooks River was diverted from the area, making more land available and the airport grew. In 1953, it was renamed for the Australian Aviation pioneer, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. For many years, the local people called it Mascot Airport. Two paved runways were built in 1959. The passenger terminal was opened in 1970.

Scenic Helicopter Flights

The short tour, Super Saturday, is approximately 20 minutes of flying around the Harbour. A tour to Killcare offers to land you there for lunch. The Harbour Highlights Scenic Flight flies over the beaches and cliffs. A helicopter tour is a great way to see the sights.
