Tamworth

Tamworth, New South Wales is on the banks of the Peel River, in the New England region. The latest census showed nearly 48,000 people living in the LGA of Tamworth Regional Council. It lies midway between Sydney and Brisbane. Tamworth is a city of renown, for several things. It is known as the “First City of Lights,” as it used electric streetlights in about 1888. Australians call Tamworth the “Country Music Capital of Australia,” with the Tamworth Country Music Festival held here every January. A large number of equine events are held at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre. The centre is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest event centre of its kind. Tamworth is recognized as the Australian “The National Equine Capital.” In its earliest history, the Kamilaroi people inhabited the land. John Oxley was one of the first explorers to find the Peel Valley. He called it a ‘fine’ and ‘luxuriant country.’ In 1831, sheep stations and cattle stations began. A town was soon built on the southwest bank of the river. In 1850, another town was built on the opposite bank. The two towns merged and, today, they are called Tamworth. The New England and Oxley Highways pass through the city.
