Taree

Located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Taree is a city of about 20,000 people. It is located in the LGA of the City of Greater Taree. The name is a Biripi word, ‘Tareebit,’ meaning ‘tree by the river.’ The surrounding area was settled in about 1831, by William Wynter. The town’s layout and platting was done by Wynter’s son-in-law, Henry Flett in 1854. It was declared a municipality, and the first municipal council was elected in 1844. Although the federal government had named Wingham as the administrative centre, the arrival of the North Coast Railway changed that. The railroad chose to connect to Taree, and routed around Wingham. In 1913, Taree was named to replace Wingham. Transportation by sea was the norm, despite the presence of the railroad. This prevented Taree’s growth, until the Martin Bridge was built in 1940. It replaced the Manning River ferry. Today, in Albert Street, you can find the oldest remaining building in Taree. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was built in 1869. The Victorian Gothic Revival style building is next door to the newer church building. Historic towns, such as Tinonee, Wingham, and Old Bar, are within a short drive of Taree.

Taree Events

The Annual Pointscore Rowing Regatta and the Manning River Summer Festival are held throughout the month of January. Rowboats are replaced by powerboat competitions, when the Easter Powerboat Classic is held in March, on the Manning River. Horseracing takes centre stage in August with the Taree Gold Cup. The Bushland Drive Racecourse is the venue for this auspicious race. The Taree Annual Show occupies the second weekend of October, with its rodeo events and livestock judging.

Yacaaba Head Walk

Drive your rental car from Taree to Hawks Nest and take a walk. The track starts in Hawks Nest Beach, with a well-defined, smooth path. After a stroll through the tall forest, the tracks goes round the northern hillside, from which you can see astounding views of the countryside. At that point, the track becomes more suitable for experienced trekkers. The path is very steep, but the reward is a phenomenal view.
