Tingalpa Queensland

Tingalpa is just 10km from central Brisbane as the crow flies, but with its wind-blown scenery and welcoming locals, it feels like another world. Founded in the 1860s, Tingalpa was named after local Tingalpa Creek, whose name in turn derived from the Aboriginal word for ‘well-fed kangaroo’. It now has some 8,000 inhabitants, many of whom work in Brisbane but like to come home to a relaxing small-town environment. This influx of commuters has led to a huge increase in real estate prices in the last 20 years, with prices now among the highest of any similar Brisbane suburb, but so far has caused no real social problems in the community. Facilities are excellent for a town of Tingalpa’s small size, with three high schools, two shopping centres and an assortment of parks, doctors’ surgeries, post offices and so on. The town has the friendliness and community spirit of a remote country village, but is less than half an hour’s drive from the edge of Brisbane. Little Tingalpa shows the perfect combination of small-town warmth and big-city convenience.

Things to see in Tingalpa

Christ Church is a gothic-style Anglican chuch, built in 1968. The architect, Richard Suter, was born nearby and had never been further afield than Brisbane, but he was inspired by the parish churches of Europe which he had seen engravings of in library books. It was not only the first church in Tingalpa, but one of the first buildings – before the church was built, the town was only houses and a small post office.

There’s a well-equipped polo ground between Bulimba Creek and the motorway, which is well worth a visit even if you don’t know anything about the game. There are always a few players about, practising or looking after their horses, and they’re more than happy to show visitors around the court. Although we consider polo to be an English sport, the hard dry grassland of Queensland is actually perfect for the game, and it’s surprisingly popular here.
