Underwood QLD

Underwood is a small, sleepy suburb of Logan City, which in turn is a satellite of Brisbane. It was named originally for William Underwood, who ran both the pub and the post office around which the earliest settlements collected. It was an independent town until the 1990s, when it was officially absorbed into Logan – although practically, of course, the two towns had been mingled for years. The coming of the motorway in 1986 caused a small boom in Underwood. It allowed local commuters to get to their jobs more quickly, and made it easier for those in surrounding villages to come into Underwood for business. The ease of access to Logan City and Brisbane means Underwood is now a popular dormitory town for commuters – since the building of the motorway, the population has almost doubled (from 2,600 to 4,500), and most of that increase has been city workers seeking a slice of country living. With three large shopping centres, several good schools, and an important mail sorting depot for Brisbane, the area is an important hub for the rural communities which surround it.

Souths Logan Magpies

The Souths Logan Magpies, nicknamed the ‘Souths’, are one of the oldest surviving rugby clubs in Australia. They began as the Souths Magpies, playing in southern Brisbane and Logan City from as early as 1910 – only the second year of rugby league games in Queensland. Their home ground is Davies Park in west Brisbane, but they regularly play at other venues around the city, and you can watch them play every weekend throughout the season.

Underwood March Mystery Month

Organised by the local library service and a network of volunteers, it offers activities such as giant crossword puzzles, fiction writing workshops and a mystery treasure hunt. With activities taking place throughout the month, you can drop into just one event or see them all.
