Warwick - Queensland

Warwick was established in 1849 near a booming local sheep station: the boundaries of the town shifted somewhat over the years, until it settled in its current location, 160km south of Brisbane and 80km southwest of Toowoomba. Although it was not the earliest settlement in Queensland, it was the first place after Brisbane to be recognised as a town by the government. The railway came in 1897, but it didn’t gain city status until 1936 – it was rumoured that Prime Minister Billy Hughes took a personal dislike to the town after an egg was thrown at him while he spoke there in 1917. Its farming roots are reflected in its nickname, ‘Rodeo City’. The town still holds an annual rodeo to celebrate the harvest. It’s also called ‘Rose City’, in reflection of the thousands of roses planted along the streets of Warwick and in central Leslie Park. Thanks to its position on the shores of the Condamine River, Warwick is blessed with fertile soil perfect for growing plants – everything from wine grapes to timber flourishes here. The lush grazing grass is said to be the source of the unique taste of Warwick beef, which is renowned all over Australia.

Interesting things to see and do around Warwick

The nearby town of Killarney, on the western edge of Main Range national park, is perfect for a day-trip. Nicknamed the ‘Rose of the Darling Downs’, it’s surrounded by glorious waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views. There are dozens of walking tours to suit all levels of fitness, from relaxed strolls around the edge of the town to taxing full-day hikes into the mountains. In summer, a dip in the waterfall pools is the perfect way to cool off.

The Warwick Rodeo is an annual event, held every October since 1867. It’s a huge event involving 300 volunteers manning 27 sections. As well as the ‘serious’ rodeo competition, featuring high-risk traditional events like buckjumping, there are fun have-a-go activities which anyone can join in. Games like Sheaf Throwing and Dog Jumping allow the whole community to get involved, and craft and cooking contests cater for the unathletic.
