Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are a chain of 74 tropical islands on the Great Barrier Reef. Although just a short ferry ride from the coast of Queensland, they feel like another world. They are part of a larger chain, the Cumberland Islands, which extends all down the eastern coast of Australia. Most of Whitsundays are totally deserted, but eight of the inhabited islands also offer tourist accommodation, and any one of them is a great place to begin your trip. The Whitsundays receive almost a million visitors a year, but with miles of golden beaches and no high-rise hotels, they still feel like an undiscovered paradise. The chain was said to be have been discovered by Captain Cook on Whitsunday;the peculiar island names, such Dumbbell Island and Plum Pudding Island, were chosen by his crew. Due to their proximity to mainland Australia, the Whitsundays are peaceful but not isolated – the pace of life might be a little slower than you’re used to, but you can still get wi-fi and a cold beer in any beachside café. Tourism is a big part of the Whitsundays economy, and they offer everything from deluxe five-star hotels to self-catering beach huts.

Check Out Daydream Island

Daydream Island is one of the closest to the coast. It’s almost totally covered by the Daydream Island Resort and Spa, so perfect for fans of all-inclusive holidays. Choose between a few days of total relaxation, or a quick day trip. Go to the Living Reef attraction for fun scuba diving, de-stress in the whirlpool bath, or grab a tropical cocktail at the swim-up bar. Children are taken care of at the hotel kids’ club.

Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven Beach is a 7km stretch of coastline along Whitsunday Island, the largest island in the Whitsundays chain. It has regularly been awarded prizes as Australia’s cleanest beach – dogs and smoking are both banned. The pristine white sand is 98% silica, which does not retain heat, making it comfortable even on hot days. Try taking a dip in the turquoise water, which is warm year-round from the sheltering effect of the nearby reef.
