Wollongong

Located in the Illawarra region, Wollongong, New South Wales is home to about 293,000 people. It is Australia’s ninth largest city. The seaside city is on a coastal strip between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra Escarpment. There are probably more than a half dozen interpretations of the name; however, “seas of the south” is probably closest to the aboriginal word. Other translations are ‘”great feast of fish,” “hard ground near water,” and “many snakes.” The true meaning may never be known. The University of Wollongong has its main campus here, and is home to about 22,000 students. The city is home to one of the southern hemisphere’s largest Buddhist temples, the Nan Tien Temple. There are two cathedrals in the city. Heavy industry and port activity are important to the economy of the area, and tourism contributes heavily. The terrain surrounding Wollongong is beautiful and varied, and almost iconically Australian. With the Tasman Sea on its east and the Illawarra Escarpment on its west, the narrow coastal plain has panoramic vistas in any direction. South of the city, Lake Illawarra is a large lagoon. The temperate rainforest has a number of adit entrances to coal mines.

Music in the City

If there is a particular genre of music that appeals to you, you can probably find it in Wollongong. From the Symphony Orchestra to the jazz clubs to the BlueScope Steel Youth Orchestra and stoner rock bands, concert halls and bars are home to talented musicians. Take a few hours of your time and enjoy some live music from very talented musician/artists. Nightclubs, pubs, and registered clubs are teeming with bands and groups.

A Light on the City

Belmore Basin Lighthouse is located on the Wollongong breakwater. It was commissioned in 1872 and served the basin as a safety beacon until the 1930s. Prefabricated elsewhere, the structure was assembled on the coast and the light was powered, at first, by vegetable oil. Later, in the early 20th century, the light behind the refractor lens was powered by gas. An improved, larger lighthouse took its place in the 1930s.
