Yeppoon

Yeppoon, on the Capricorn Coast of eastern Queensland, is the ancestral home of the Darumbal Aboriginal people. The first Europeans to settle there were the Ross family, a multi-generational Scottish clan who had huge landholdings up and down the coast. The farms around the town mostly grew tropical fruit such as pinapple and mango, and raised sheep for wool and cows for beef.Yeppoonwas founded as a seaside resort in the 19th century, mostly serving miners and their families from the towns further inland. It began with six holiday cottages and a hotel built in 1882, gradually growing with the tourist trade, and the fertile soil attracted rural settlers to the outlying areas. The town experienced a brief boom when gold was discovered nearby, but it soon transpired the seams were unworkable. The number of tourists in Yeppoon have trailed off since the railway was closed in 1970, but it’s still a pleasant place to spend a few days, and a worthwhile stop on any visit to Queensland. Lying just 75km from industrial Rockhampton, or a morning’s drive from state capital Brisbane, it’s easily reached by the Scenic Highway.

Great Keppel Island

Great Keppel Island lies 15km from the coast of Yeppoon, one of a chain of 39 island reachable from the town. With golden sandy beaches and warm azure waters, this is a little slice of paradise just 30 minutes by ferry from Yeppoon port. The area is around 15 square kilometres, small enough to walk across in a day. It’s easily visited as a day trip, or if you want to stay overnight, accommodation ranges from tents on the beach to luxurious huts.

Take a drive in a rental car to Rockhampton

Rockhampton is the nearest large city, with some 60,000 inhabitants. Although it’s not as pretty as Yeppoon, it has some interesting cultural activities and is certainly worth a visit. Check out the Rockhampton Art Gallery, which holds a diverse range of modern Australian art, or the Archer Park Steam Tram Museum, the only one of its kind in the world. The city also has a lot of interesting displays on Aboriginal art and culture, and an interactive township museum.
