Young

Young, New South Wales is located in the South West Slopes region of the state. As of the 2011 census, there were nearly 7,000 people residing in the centre of Young Shire. Young is on the Olympic Highway, about two hours from Canberra, in a lovely valley surrounded by hills. It was named for the Governor of NSW from 1861 to 1867, Sir John Young. Member of the Burrowmunditory tribe of the Wiradjuri were the first inhabitants of this land. In 1826, James White laid claim to 100 square miles and founded Burrangong Station. In 1860, gold was discovered in the area that had been known as Lambing Flat. Sheep grazing was the foremost industry until gold mining. Over 470,000 ounces of gold were mined by nearly 20,000 miners. Chinese miners number nearly 2,000. The Lambing Flat Post Office opened for business in 1861, and the city was renamed in 1863. The mines became infamous for the Lambing Flat riots, when anti-Chinese workers attached the Chinese gold miners of the area. The more industrious Chinese were finding more gold, as supply dwindled, and it was highly resented. The Chinese were robbed and killed. The ultimate result was a limit placed on Chinese immigrants.
