Townsville – the northern capital

Posted by Jeremy Storer on November 7, 2010

Townsville, located in northern QLD is unofficially known as the northern capital. Townsville is a very popular tourist destination due to the many sights to see and activities to do in the area including the Great Barrier Reef.

Townsville was a very small town in the 1860’s and over time it has engulfed all the smaller surrounding towns to become the dominant city in the area. During WW2 Townsville hosted many American and Australian soldiers when the Allies were trying to cover the pacific region. The Japanese bombed the area in 1942 but it didn’t the city very much.
