A part of Antarctic which was claimed in the year 1933 by the United Kingdom and placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia is the largest territory which is composed of all the islands and territory south of 60°S and between 45°E and 160°E with its borders by Queen Maud Land in the West and by Ross Dependency in the East and the area is approximately 5,896,500 km².

In the Australian Antarctic Territory below Vostok, a Russian base there is a lake known as Lake Vostok which is similar in size to Lake Ontario and one of the larger fresh water lakes of the planet and was discovered by airborne ice penetrating radar in around 1970. Lake Vostok inhabitant many types of microorganisms in it, and may be multicellular organisms as well although the liquid lake itself has not been penetrated yet. Many postage stamps for the Australian Antarctic Territory have been issued by Australia and the first one was issued in 1957.
