Dee Why

Dee Why, New South Wales is a Sydney suburb with a population of nearly 18,000 people. The Warringah Council has its administrative centre here. The origins of the name are uncertain; however, a penciled note in a surveyor’s field book cited “Dy Beach.” Various theories have been put forth, including that the letters meant nothing more than a mark he used for record keeping. A second theory says it was an aboriginal word, as the surveyor used their language for many locations. A third theory states that it is a derivative in calculus referring to the shape of the curve of beach on the map. However the name was contrived, Dee Why it remains. In its very early history, the indigenous people were fishermen, using the midden at the southern end of the beach and the lagoon for fishing spots. The lagoon was wider and deeper. At one time, large flocks of black swans congregated here. In the mid 19th century, the James Jenkins family acquired most of the land grant that had belonged to William Cossar. The 200 acres that resided in Dee Why were bequeathed to the Salvation Army in 1900 and an industrial farm was established.

Dee Why Beach and Lagoon

The Dee Why Beach is separated from the Lagoon by sand dunes, and is the location of the Ted Jackson Reserve. There are picnic areas, pines, and beautiful vistas to be seen near the beach. A seawall was reconstructed in 2006 and has additional pathways, lookout platforms, and stairs. Playgrounds are located near the Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club and ocean pools are found below the southern cliffs. There is ample free parking near the Club.

Long Reef Beach

Situated in Sydney’s northern peninsula beach area, Long Reef is home to an extended reef. This reef is a protected aquatic reserve where you can walk. The offshore reefs and beach breaks running from Long Reef to Dee Why can offer some quality waves to surf. The headlands of Long Reef are home to a scenic golf course so that you may enjoy a round of golf while taking in the outstanding nature of the beach.
