Parkes Airport

Parkes Airport, New South Wales is located about 7.5 kilometres from the Parkes city centre. The airport is owned and operated by the Parkes Shire Council. Previously, the federal government owned the facility. Regional Express services the airport, with flights to Sydney. In 2011, about 32,000 passengers used the airport’s scheduled services. This figure was about three times the number of revenue passengers in 2001, when the airport opened. The facility has two runways, an aircraft fuel agent, a maintenance and repair service for aircraft, and a passenger terminal. The terminal has flight desk, baggage claim, rental car agents, and a car park. The runways are lighted at night, and operation of the lights is pilot-activated. There is no control tower. The Shire Council is in the process of upgrading the airport facility from Registered to Certified status. The council and area businesses have explored the possibility of making Parkes an ‘inland port,’ with Parkes Regional Airport handling the bulk of the transportation. While environmental studies have been completed and consents are in place, studies continue. The proposed expansion of the airport would make the facility a full-time enterprise, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Goobang Park

Take a drive of approximately 30 kilometres from Parkes Airport and visit the beautiful Goobang National Park. There are three mountain ranges within the park, the Bumberry, Currumbenya, and the Herveys. Over 40 species of orchids and 300 plant species have been recorded in the park. Visitors in the park can take advantage of bushwalking, bird watching, nature study, picnicking, camping, and photography. The Parkes Visitor Information Centre can give you further information about the park and camping.

Utes in the Paddock

A short distance from Parkes Airport, you can visit an entirely unique artistic endeavour. Based on the USA art exhibit in Texas, called Cadillac Ranch, the Pickles family decided to undertake something similar for New South Wales. Famous regional outback artists painted, reconstructed, and otherwise altered the old utes, then buried them in the paddock. The Gallery extends an invitation to see these art works ‘close up.’
