Quirindi

Quirindi, New South Wales is a North West Slopes small town. It is located in Liverpool Plains Shire. As of the 2006, the population was approximately 2,600 people. The land surrounding Quirindi is fertile black soil to the west and hilly to the east. This makes two industries successful with farming on the soil and livestock grazing on the hills. The town lies northwest of the junction of the New England Highway and the Kamilaroi Highway, at Willow Tree. The Kamilaroi people were the first occupants of this region of Australia. The Gamilaraay aborigines called it ‘cuerindi’ and ‘kuwherindi.’ The meanings of the word are subject to conjecture. Several different interpretations have been put forth, including ‘nest in the hills,’ ‘place of many possums,’ ‘dead tree on the mountaintop,’ and ‘nest in the hills.’ It will forever remain uncertain which one is correct, as academics cannot agree. Quirindi today is home to some excellent sporting facilities. There are ovals for general athletics, both rugby codes, soccer, cricket, basketball, and netball. The racecourse serves as a polo grounds, rodeo venue, and is better known as “Randwick of the North.” Stu Johnson Park is a venue for motocross racing, with numerous features that appeal to bikers.

Heritage Village

The Quirindi Rural Heritage Village is a complex of exhibits and buildings from the 19th century, including a dairy, bakery, milk bar, and butcher shop. You can view exhibits of kitchenware, lacework, and crafts of an earlier time. There are tractors, steam engines, lawnmowers and more on display. Take a ride on the 650-metre miniature railway. Have a coffee at the on-premises coffee shop. An annual swap meet is held in May for machinery enthusiasts.

First Fleet Memorial Gardens

Lying on the banks of Quirindi Creek, the First and Second Fleet Memorial is a tribute to the passengers of the First Fleet. The names of each and every person who arrived in Australia on the eleven ships that landed in 1788 are carved on tablets. The stonemason was Ray Collins. Other markers around the beautiful gardens tell the story of what the First Fleet encountered when it arrived in Australia.
