Westmead, New South Wales is a suburb located about 26 km west of Sydney’s business centre. It is in the LGA of the City of Parramatta, and lies on the banks of the Parramatta River, Finlayson Creek, and Toongabbie Creek. The Great Western Highway forms the suburb’s southern bounds. The name Westmead was first used when the domain of Government House was subdivided, in 1859. The Northern and Western Meadows of the domain were renamed to Westmead and Northmead, after the subdivision was finalized. Some of the new settlers to this area established orchards in the area. Some of these names are still well known and associated with the Parramatta area, such as Nat Payten, William Fullagar, and George Oakes. In 1820, the Parramatta Marist School in Hunter Street was established by Fr. John Therry. The school was under George Morley’s direction. In 1837, the school relocated to the location of the present school. In 1875, the Marist Brothers took over operation of the school, which is today the oldest Catholic school in the country. The University of Western Sydney has a campus in Westmead. Westmead Christian Grammar School was established in 1983.

Cultural Melting Pot

There are many cultures represented in the Westmead area, and sometimes the best way to find out about differing heritages is to sample the food. Regional Vietnamese cuisine is popular, so try some noodles or pho. You can even take a guided tour in the community that will acquaint you with cuisine, herbalists, and butcher shops selling ‘wind-dried’ sausage. Drive your car hire through the Westmead and surrounding areas, and see what new foods you can discover.

Sydney Harbour

You can’t go wrong exploring this iconic harbour and landmark. But, don’t forget to walk the islands. Shark Island, Rodd Island, and Cockatoo Island all offer a new perspective on the Sydney Harbour and skyline of the city. Some islands are home to huge shipbuilding yards that you can observe. Camping is available or rent a house and stay for a few days. Don’t forget the Harbour Circle Walk, a five-hour trek that will delight you.
