Yass

Yass, New South Wales is in the Southern Tableland, in Yass Valley Shire. At the latest census, it had about 5,600 people residing on the Yass River. The Yass is a tributary of Murrumbidgee River. The town is located about 60 km from Canberra, and less than 300 km from Sydney, if you take the Hume Highway. The area was first explored in 1821, on an expedition with Hamilton Hume as its leader. By 1830, settlers arrived in the area. District Council was founded in 1843 and by 1848, there were 275 people in the community. A.B. “Banjo” Peterson, Australia’s well-loved poet, lived his childhood, from age seven on, in the district. In his later life, he bought a Wee Jasper property so his children could discover the country life. Patrick Hartigan, who went by the pen name John O’Brien, was a well-known poet and priest. He was born in 1878 in Yass and was schooled at the local convent. Because of the soil and climate of the area, there are many famous sheep studs producing remarkably fine wool. The railroad was important to early 20th century Yass, but the last passenger train operated in 1988, with steam locomotives pulling the cars.

Canberra District Wines

Cellar door sales are available, or you’ll find that the Yass Valley Visitor Information Centre has the wines available for sale. Tours are available by appointment, but the tasting room is open to the public.
