Esperance Airport is located a short distance from the town of Esperance, less than 22 km. It is situated close to the locality of Gibson. In the late 19th century, gold was discovered to the north of the town, and miners and pastoralists settled in the area. The Dempster family first settled at the Esperance townsite in the 1870s. Agriculture in the area received a boost in the 20th century with the new technology of superphosphate fertilization of crops.
