Newman, Western Australia

Newman, Western Australia is located in the Pilbara region of the state, about 1,200 kilometres north of Perth. It is only 9 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The 2006 census counted 4,245 in the town on the Great Northern Highway. Newman is considered a mining town, but one that is quite modern. The residences are suburban-style, and contrast remarkably with the surrounding desert. Hickman Crater is north of Newman, by about 35 km. A.W. Newman was an early European explorer to the region. Mount Newman was the first landmark named for the explorer, and the town took its name from the mountain. The land surrounding the mountain was marginal, as best, for cattle grazing. In the 1960s, rich iron deposits were discovered on Mount Whaleback, nearby. The town was built by Mount Newman Mining Company. It is a fine example of a company town, with stores and hotels around the city centre, residences built around the centre, and industry in the outskirts of town. The town’s outdoor swimming pool is open to the public, including visitors.

Newman claims the world’s longest train. In 2001, it left the mines with 8 locomotives and 682 ore cars and rolled on to Port Hedland.

Carawine Gorge

This relatively unknown recreation spot will take your breath away. If you don’t mind getting off the beaten path, there are discoveries to be made in the gorge. The crystal clear water is perfect for swimming, and the fishing is superlative. Set up camp on the bank of the gorge and be amazed by the rock formations. Quartz and other coloured rocks are found throughout the gorge. Relax and enjoy the multitude of bird species found here.

Hike the Mount

Mount Newman is a remarkable venue for rock climbing and hiking. The surrounding landscape is richly coloured by the minerals found throughout the region. Iron, especially, colours the rocks. The climb to the top is reasonably challenging, but the view from the top is astounding. You’ll see the Ophthalmia Ranges and the surrounding plains. You can get about half way to the summit in a four-wheel drive vehicle.
