Paraburdoo, Western Australia

Located in the Pilbara region of the state, Paraburdoo is a company mining town with a population of about 1,600 people. Most residents are employed by Pilbara Iron, formerly known as Hamersley Iron. The miners work at one of three Rio Tinto mines, Paraburdoo, Eastern Range, and Channar. The town is just 24 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn and an hour’s drive from Tom Price, another mining town. The purpose-built town was begun in January 1970. In addition to homes, the town has a motel/hotel complex, a college, and a hospital. The shopping centre is well stocked, and there is a variety of sporting facilities for the miners and their families.

The port of choice for Paraburdoo, as well as Tom Price, is located on the Burrup Peninsula and is called Dampier. You can tour various industries in the port city. Visiting Aboriginal sites and the indigenous people’s rock carvings and engravings is a popular pastime, as well. Further up the coast, you’ll find more company mining towns that are now nearly ghost towns. Whim Creek was an old copper mining town. It has now disappeared, leaving behind the Whim Creek Hotel, which is worth a look.

Karijini National Park

This gorgeous national park is closest to Paraburdoo and home to the stunning Hamersley Range and the fantastic contours of the rock formations. An interpretive centre, near the southwest end of the park is staffed with the Karijini people, who know all about the area. Close to the Centre, you’ll find Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool. The gorges found throughout the park are as beautiful as they are formidable. Some of the walking trails between gorges are easily navigated; others present a challenge.

Millstream Chichester

Also located in the Pilbara, this state park offers spectacular bushwalking opportunity. A number of driving adventures can be found within the confines of the park, including the Murlunmunyjurna Trail, Cliff Lookout Drive, and the Chichester Range Camel Track. Yinjinarndi Aborigines at the Millstream Homestead can tell you wonderful stories about the land and the people of this area.
